The Souls We Meet: How Soulmates, Twin Flames & Karmic Connections Shape Us

“There is a purpose for everyone you meet. Some people will test you, some will use you, some will bring out the best in you, but everyone will teach you something about yourself.”   ~Anonymous

Sometimes someone walks into your life, with no logic, no explanation, and you just know.  You and this person were meant to cross paths.

I never understood the meaning of soul contracts or fated soul connections until I met my twin flame six years ago.  Meeting him opened the portal to a whole new level of existence.

It changed my being.

It changed my awareness.

It cracked me wide open.

Through our encounter, I have come to understand many things… about myself, about humanity, about the Cosmos.  But perhaps the most freeing realization I have come to  is that every person we meet is our teacher.  No matter how fleeting a person’s chapter in our story may be, it inevitably leaves a mark… either positive or negative.

Each and every soul encounter serves a purpose… even the painful ones.

Some souls come to us as angels in time of need.

Some come as anchors through life’s storms.

Some as catalysts that ignite a long-forgotten spark.

And others… antagonists that challenge us in uncomfortable ways.

Whatever the role, these fated soul encounters arrive with Divine precision, at the exact moment of our journey where we are ready to meet them.  I will even argue, based on personal experience and my own level of awareness, that they are pre-ordained.

Have you ever met someone and felt a strange familiarity, as if you had met them before?  You lock eyes, begin talking, and tune into one another’s presence.  Something about them strikes you.  Somehow, even though you just met, you know them.

You feel more deeply seen and connected than you do with your own family.

That’s when it hits you:  a moment of instant recognition.  A soft landing in your gut, an opening of your senses, an inexplicable closeness and kinship. Your body relaxes as if you’d just come face-to-face with a long-time friend.

You find yourself noticing their voice, their facial expressions, their presence like you’d known them all along.  Strangely comfortable and familiar.

That’s not chemistry.  It’s not hormones.  It’s not imagination.

It’s remembrance.

THAT is the sign you’ve just met someone from your soul family or a past life.  These connections can be friendships, family members, or romantic partners, and your connection with them can be either positive or negative.

Connections like these are not built.  They are two souls recognizing one another from a previous time and place.  Somewhere along your soul’s journey, you met this person before.  You have a history together… a love, a loss, or something left unfinished.

So, when these souls walk into your life, it’s as if something deep inside your being awakens.  A recognition.  A remembrance.

I have met you before.

No matter how they impact you or how long they stay in your life, one thing is for sure: they have come for a very specific purpose.  Usually, to teach you.  Through their presence, you will walk away with something new.  A lesson.  A skill.  A perspective you didn’t have before.

Even the souls that challenge us the most are here to help us evolve.  In fact, those soul encounters are sometimes the ones that bring the greatest transformation.

Could it be that the narcissist ex we thought was our enemy was actually our teacher, sent here to push us towards our highest path?  To teach us to love ourselves more, to enforce our boundaries, and to stop tolerating disrespect?

And, could it also be that their presence in our life was purposefully designed to play that role?

Whether you have come to understand soul connections this way or not, our souls form agreements, or contracts, with certain individuals so that we can overcome the blocks, lessons, and limitations that are holding us back.

There are many different types of contracts, but for the purpose of this message, we are going to focus on the most common soul connections and the purpose they serve.

Understanding this will shift the way you view the people that come into your life and also help you better appreciate the role they are here to play.

Types of Soul Connections and Their Purpose

To give a brief overview, let’s review some of the types of soul connections or contracts you may encounter along your spiritual path.  Keep in mind, none of these are “good” or “bad” per se; they are simply serving different purposes.

Karmic or 3D Connections

Number one, the karmic connection.  These are the types of relationships many of us will experience prior to evolving spiritually or waking up, although they can come to us at any time, especially if we have agreements or lessons that have yet to be completed.

Karmic relationships are those we enter into for the purpose of learning certain lessons, usually painful ones.  They are characterized by drama, conflict, trauma, unhealthy attachments, and betrayal.  They are unpredictable, emotionally-charged, and challenging, often presenting to us lessons we have yet to resolve from previous lifetimes.

In addition, they tend to be more superficial and involve less depth.

Karmic connections do not have to be romantic.  They can also include friendships and family relationships.

Unlike divine connections, Karmic relationships fuel our growth in a more negative way. They push our buttons or trigger our healing by causing us so much pain and discomfort that we finally say “no” or master the lesson.

These relationships usually dissolve once the lesson is learned and the contract is complete.

Soulmates or Soul Family

Next, the soulmate or soul family connection.  Soulmates or soul family connections are the ones I described earlier on.  These connections will possess an element of familiarity, peace, and soul recognition.

Rather than causing growth through suffering, these connections offer reciprocity, mutual support, and meaningful connection.  When you are with someone from your soul family, whether romantically or platonically, you will feel seen and understood in a way that Karmic connections will never offer.

Soulmates are kindred spirits who resonate with you on many levels.  They are people with whom you share a special bond, characterized by peace, harmony, and free flowing synergy.

While some soulmates will remain in your lifetime forever, others will exit your life due to uncontrollable circumstances… a career, a move, different life paths.  But regardless of time or distance, these bonds never break.

Divine Counterparts

Third are divine counterparts.  Divine counterparts are romantic connections we share with others who are on the same path of spiritual growth and evolution.  Usually, divine counterparts find each other when both souls have reached their highest timeline: when both souls are living in their purpose and have done their healing work.

These connections are romantic and are intended to help us break through previous limitations of love and union.  They encourage us to become more of ourselves, to step into our missions here on earth, and to embody the traits of our most authentic selves.

Connections like these are rare, because they require that two souls meet after they have already completed most of their Karmic lessons and have reached a certain level of spiritual maturity.  These are the connections of the future we are moving toward as a society.

Twin Flames

Lastly, twin flames.  Twin flames are…  well, let’s just say a once-in-a-lifetime soul-shattering encounter.  More often than not, they begin with an intense soul encounter that creates upheaval in one or both of the twins’ lives. The intensity of their initial meeting often sends the two into separation, during which time each twin goes on their own path of healing and spiritual growth.

What distinguishes twin flame connections from divine counterpart connections is that they almost always serve as the catalyst for one’s awakening.  They crack you wide open so you can see the parts of yourself you’ve been running from and do the necessary healing work to face your shadows.

These connections are passionate, intense, and generally quite uncomfortable.  At least in the beginning.  However, twin flames can reconnect and reunite in a positive, healthy way once they each have completed their karmic lessons and come into wholeness within themselves.

Twin flames feel each other during separation and are often responsible for the other person’s growth from a distance.  Their soul tie is one of the strongest, based on unconditional love, acceptance, and detachment.

To go into more depth with each of these types of connections, I invite you to watch the YouTube message I delivered on this topic.

7 Cues You're in a Karmic Connection

The last piece of guidance I want to offer here is regarding Karmic connections.  Because Karmic connections are the most common and also the most painful, learning how to spot them is an important step in releasing yourself from the unhealthy patterns.

You will know you are in a Karmic relationship if you can identify one or more of the following:

  • Trauma bonding: an unhealthy, sometimes abusive attachment that forms when two people are carrying out the wounds of the past
  • Lack of safety (emotional or otherwise): the person invalidates your feelings, crosses your boundaries, or threatens your well being in some way
  • Drama & conflict: a lack of peace, frequent arguments and tension
  • Performance & pretending: you can’t be yourself; the relationship is based on status or outward appearances
  • Lack of Transparency: the relationship is characterized by lies or deception; the person hides information from you or tells partial truths
  • Codependency (unhealthy attachment): usually a giver – taker dynamic that is emotionally and physically draining
  • One-sided (imbalanced): there is no reciprocity; only one person’s needs are being met

Karmic connections such as these will naturally run their course or will reach a climax point where the strain of the relationship can no longer be sustained.

On a spiritual level, Karmic relationships are all about completing contracts. Once we have learned the lessons the relationship came to teach us, we will feel in our spirit that it is time to release the connection.

There will be this inner feeling of closure or finality.  You will intuitively sense that your soul contract with them has ended.

When you understand how these different connections work, you will never regret meeting anyone or blame anyone for what they do to you.

You will see them all as teachers and as co-creators in your evolution.  For better or for worse, they are leaving you changed.  They are providing you with valuable insight that you need to move forward on your path.  Only this time, stronger, wiser, more ready to meet what lies ahead.

Instead of regretting the difficult lessons and experiences, thank them for what they taught you.  Thank them for the role they played in moving you one step closer towards your highest potential.  For helping you remember who you truly are.

Without them, you would still be the old version of yourself:  the one who accepted less than what s/he deserved.  The one who remained stuck in loops and repeating patterns.  The one who was afraid to choose differently.

But thank God that is no longer you.

You learned.  You evolved.  You transformed.

The you that exist today is grateful for that.  And for the ones who shaped you.

No regrets.  Only love.

Be blessed. ♥
